How To Get To Spring

Clay Pipe

Released: 10th April 2020

I’m not sure if we ever got to spring in 2020 but Jon Brooks provided us with a scenic route - if only we’d been able to better use the roadmap. One of our favourites (permanent collection), Jon is the main connector between two of our dearest labels, Ghost Box and Clay Pipe - a consistently brilliant musician and magical mastering engineer. While Advisory Circle (their Ghost Box alias) is often slightly claustrophobic, BBC Workshop-y, the records for Clay Pipe seem more outdoors, closer to nature. In a way they match label owner, Frances Castle’s beautiful artwork perfectly, or maybe it’s the other way around. Whatever, How To Get To Spring has a timeless modernity about it - the melodies are as gorgeous as Bill Evans or Roedelius or Virginia Astley, there’s a narrative of moving towards a better horizon. There’s a sense of hope here, a smile, and in 2020 that was more than enough.

Jon Brook’s ‘How to Get to Spring’ is their fourth record on Clay Pipe. Stepping into new sonic territory with a gentle nod to his more recent Advisory Circle work, he has produced a beautiful new record that moves us gently from the winter into the spring.
“It’s when we realise that even the most seemingly inextricable connections are but, a flicker. Despite devices put in place, to the contrary, every connection is, ultimately, a temporary one."
