Featuring filmmaker David Mackenzie's music written with and re-worked by various Glasgow musician alumni, Starred Up is a striking, beautiful set. With contributions from Chris Beans Geddes, Raymond MacDonald, actor Ewan Bremner and presided over by studio maestro Tony Doogan, Starred Up is a great calling card for the original music used in the film.
Mackenzie's original music was composed "to sit almost imperceptibly in the film as a bed of sound which merged into the prison atmospheres," but was then given to Tony Doogan and cohorts to re-work in their own styles and in adherence to some film music conventions. Also featuring the guest vocals of Ferosa Mackenzie, the Glasgow all-stars' reimagining of the original score brings the melodies into a landscape, fleshing out the harmonies and dynamics into some stirring stuff somewhere between Mackenzies own Young Adam (which also featured Doogan) and something on Blackest Ever Black.
