How often do you across a record that is genuinely, authentically bonkers? Welcome to Randy Williams.
Recorded by Randy Williams in 1997 at home studio in San Francisco, California, after a two year stay at Camp Darby military base near Pisa, Italy and some occasional off-duty visits to Giancarlo Lobel in Rome and Marina di Pisa. The encounters made in that period were inspiring for Williams to create a strange and personal style upon his return to the United States. Released and distributed privately in Italy and USA to group of artists and appreciators as compact disc after spectacles, and as music library soundtrack.
"Outsider" is a term bandied about a lot, but Pop Secret manages to sound properly demented, libidinously crazed and at least flicked by the fingers of fleeting genius. A musical magpie no doubt inspired by the growing access to different musics around the world, Pop Secret is voracious in its appetite to pilfer. On Tough Guys Are Cute there's an bizarro smashing together of blast beats, growled death metal vocal and squelchy 80s disco funk. On other slabs or weirdness, a DX7 style digital synth splashes around an unstoppably groovy rhythm that glistens with 90s sheen. There's a song called Pussy Magnet for christ sake. Recommended if you've got to that point in your listening life where you thought you'd heard everything that could be done in music.
