Mysterious, misty-eyed psychedelic pop mooching up from Manchester, Cowgirl In Sweden are a clandestine proposition. While the protagonists are remaining anonymous, the music feels brilliantly, evocatively familiar. Like a troupe of drifters blowing dandelions dipped in soft acid in an English countryside, Cowgirl In Sweden sounds like a Rousseau-esque Eve making music extrapolated from the waltz section of Lee & Nancy's "Some Velvet Morning" and a dash of Francoise Hardy.
The Lee Hazlewood references are bold but they are only indicators, elsewhere on the album there's a pleasing Cambridge Psych influence that seems to melt the grooves and melodies together into a slightly warped, loving gloop. In fact Cowgirl In Sweden strikes us as a postcard from an imagined past, a bucolic ideal pitched between sultry and sweetly sad that floats by nevertheless like a sunny dream. Highly recommended and gone before you can blink.
