In The Music... The Village Never Ends

Originally issued in South Africa in 1983, the sublimely gifted Letta Mbulu's "In The Music..." is a sumptuous album awash with Disco flourishes, synth stabs and a prescient, soulful sound that was to be found in abundance in the western world a couple of years later.
Opening with Sweet Juju, an upbeat Afro-funk pop track, things quickly get slower, slinkier and sexier. Nomalizo is a stand-out, with a walking synth bass line and ace delivery sounding like Evelyn "Champagne" King's best early 80s moments, and on "Down By The River" Mbulu's croon is treated to some delicious slow-disco production. Expect this to go down a storm in any late-night, smokey basement.
